Most tournaments work in the following way. They have a buy in for which you get a certain amount of chips. As the buy in is a standard fee, all players start with an equal amount of chips. This is different to a cash game where players can have varied amounts of chips to bring to the table. When a player loses all their chips they are eliminated from the tournament. The blind is raised with each hand and to keep things interesting and to progress the game forward. In effect for a relatively low buy in, it is possible to win a large amount of cash.
